TERRI’S TIPS

Work on your short game to lower your scores
Terri Migliaccio, PGA Professional Director of Player Development

DO YOU KNOW YOUR PERCENTAGES AND HOW IT CAN LOWER YOUR SCORES?

Given your typical round of golf , what percentage do you think the short game, anywhere from 70 yards in, make up your total score?

On a typical 18 hole course there are usually 4 par 3’s. Most of the time you will not be hitting your driver on these holes. So that gives you a total of 14 times you may use your driver.

The short game, anywhere from 80 or so yards in, make up between 60 – 65% of your total score.! Don’t get me wrong, I love to hit my driver and my scores are usually a little lower if I hit it in the fairway every time, but working on your approach shots, shots inside of 80 yards, your bunker play, pitching/chipping and your putting is the fastest way to improve and to lower your scores.

Next time you are out on the course keep track of every putt you take. Keep track of every chip/pitch shot you hit and keep track of how many shots you have within 80 yards of the green. You may be surprised what the total is. Most of my students come to me wanting to ‘fix’ something in their swing, when they should be learning to get the ball into the hole sooner from 80 yards in! Keep working on your short game, you will see your scores dropping!
